Research Interests

My research mainly focuses on the viruses that cause severe deaths of marine fish species worldwide. The research from complete virus structure analysis and fish epidemiological investigations to host immune mechanisms are studied and brought fundamental solutions which can be applied in the aquaculture industry to overcome bottlenecks. This includes the analysis of the virus infection route and the mechanism of fish anti-virus immune system, the analysis of the whole structure of nervous necrosis virus with a high mortality rate and the microfluidic detection and diagnosis platform for fish pathogens developed in cooperation with the College of Engineering, and further use the principle of immune-induced antibodies, turn to inhibit the negative growth regulation protein in fish, and invent "immune-inhibition technology", which can promote the rapid growth of farmed animals and bring benefits to the global food supply. Furthermore, by using smart technology in fish breeding production system, we can cultivate high-quality grouper larvae, and meanwhile improve the efficiency and accuracy of breeding, bringing benefits to the global food supply.

Anti-virus mechanism in fish

In the process of virus invasion, the fish host can rely on the start of anti-virus mechanism to resist. Through studying the multiple pathways for viruses to infect fish, a series of mechanisms for hosts to defend against virus invasion are investigated, including crucial factors for anti-virus like Mx genes (Mx1, Mx2, Mx3), interferons system (IFN-I, IFN-γ, IFN-I receptor) and immune regulation system (IRFs) in fish. The results will speed up the development of the anti-viral method, and become molecular biomarkers to estimate the anti-virus vaccine efficacy.

Complete NNV crystal structure analysis

We have cooperated with experts from National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC) and completed the three-dimensional structure analysis of nervous necrosis virus (NNV),  as the world's first to find the complete structure of the virus research team. By utilizing information from the virus crystal structure, we are able to provide a design strategy for future vaccine development, developing a high-specificity target vaccine with a specific antigen epitope, that can effectively prevent invasion of the virus, bringing in a new revolution for aquaculture disease prevention.

Microfluidic detection platform for fish virus diagnosis

The microfluidic detection platform is an automatic system combining molecular organism detection, immerging engineering and material technology, by integrating extraction of nucleic acid beads, gene amplification and optical diagnostic system diagnostic chip, through the micro-temperature control module and microfluidic transport module, the entire process of automated to rapid detection of agricultural pathogenic microorganisms. The minimized virus detection particles attribute to the past studies of our lab. Its characteristics are fast examination, high sensitivity and specificity, which make the platform an important tool in building a complete disease prevention strategy.
